West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced a slew of developmental projects for Malda as part of her pre-panchayat tour of the districts.

Banerjee said 13 model schools, seven hostels, six polytechnic institutes, a law college and a multi-speciality hospital would be set up in Malda and several hospitals would be upgraded. Several secondary schools would also be upgraded to higher secondary status.

After meeting district officials where top-level bureaucrats and several ministers were present, she also announced a Rs 41-crore water supply project for Englishbazar municipality, a Rs 40 crore Silk Park and an Information Technology hub. Tourism would also remain one of the thrust areas of the state government, she said.

Stating that the district had ample scope for small-scale industrial units, the Chief Minister said work was on to tackle the Ganga erosion problem.

A bridge would be built to link the Bhutni ‘char’ and Manikchak and three municipalities would be formed in Chachol, Gajol and Kaliachak, she said here on the second day of her tour to five districts.

Banerjee started her district tour with Nadia and Murshidabad on Wednesday and will visit North and South Dinajpur districts. The region is a Congress bastion that has sent six Congress MPs to the Lok Sabha. This visit to the districts is seen in Congress circles as an attempt to woo voters from the Congress ahead of the panchayat polls slated for end of 2012 or early next year.
