Cutting across all political lines and difference in ideologies, personalities from all political parties came together to pay tribute to Jyoti Singh, the 23-year-old paramedical student who was brutally gangraped on the ill-fated night of December 16 three years ago.

Hailing the braveheart, Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday took to Twitter to remember her and wrote: “Remembering Nirbhaya on third anniversary of brutal Delhi incident. We cannot compensate her loss but government must stand by her family in every way.”

Speaking on the stage, Nirbhaya’s emotional mother Asha Devi displayed immense character and courage by mentioning the real name of her daughter Jyoti. She also expressed anger at the decision of the probable release of the juvenile on December 20 who was involved in her daughter’s rape and subsequent death, claiming that injustice was being committed.

Speaking to Millennium Post she said: “Life is tough but ultimately the will to survive has to be there, if not for self but at least for the sake of others.” Voices of support were heard advocating stricter punishment to the juvenile. “That juvenile used to belong to my constituency and incidents of him misbehaving with women were reported earlier as well,” said Barkha Singh, former Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chief. Sharmishtha Mukherjee of the Congress said there is no quick fix solution to solving the rape crisis and urged for the reformation of mindset in society.
