The West Bengal government plans to restore Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s ancestral home at Kodalia in South 24 Parganas, give it heritage status and erect a monument to him, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday.
Speaking at Netaji’s 116th birth anniversary celebrations here, the chief minister said the Heritage Committee chaired by artist Suvaprasanna has taken the decisions to erect a monument to Netaji and restore his house in Kodalia.
‘We will create a monument in the name of the leader on 4-5 kothas of land whatever is available in Netaji’s name,’ the chief minister said.
‘We have also decided to restore the place (ancestral home) and turn it to heritage building,’ Banerjee said.
She said the building was in poor shape and needed immediate attention. ‘I am hoping we will be able to finish the work by 22 January’.
Stating that it was a matter of pride to be born in West Bengal, Banerjee said ‘It is the state of illuminaries like Netaji, Swami Vivekanda, Rabindranath Tagore, poet Nazrul and Khudiram.’
‘Bengal is the pride of the world. Bengal is about revolution,’ she said.
Quoting Netaji, the chief minister said, ‘Give me blood and I will give you independence. He had said that renunciation and realisation are two sides of a coin.’
Recalling that the planning commission was the brainchild of Netaji who also set up the Indian National Army, Banerjee said, ‘It is matter of great sorrow that we know about his birth, but not about his death...’ ‘But Subhash Chandra Bose should live forever to inspire people with his thoughts and ideas. His name should be prefixed with the word ‘brave’.’
Calling Netaji the greatest Indian ever and a visionary leader, Governor MK Narayanan said his ‘trail took him not just across India, but across the world in the quest for Independence of India. Few people have demonstrated such love and devotion for his country.’
