It was a rare farewell which saw people and politicians coming to lay their wreaths and pay homage to the late poet and litterateur Sunil Gangopadhyay on his last journey on Thursday noon.
The CM of the state, Mamata Banerjee, walked with the cortege and even managed the chaotic traffic on the poet’s journey from Rabindra Sadan to the burning ghat. Banerjee already paid her respect on her Facebook page, ‘I express my heartfelt condolence on the demise of Shri Sunil Gangyopadhyay, the famous Bengali poet and litterateur. His contributions towards Bengali literature was well recognised. With his death, Bengal has lost a renowned literary personality. I pray to the almighty to give enough strength to the bereaved family members to bear the loss. May his soul rest in peace’.
At the Rabindra Sadan there was a huge stream of mourners who waited to pay their last respect. Film-makers Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, poet Sankha Ghosh, writers Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay and Mani Shankar Mukhopadhyay, popularly known as ‘Shankar’, Nabaneeta Dev Sen were also present and recounted their memories of Gangopadhyay.
The poet who was also employed with the ABP group in his younger days, saw his colleagues of yesteryears accompanying him on his last journey.
