Over 234 shops were gutted when a major fire broke out at a Diwali cracker market in Dusherra Ground at around 6.15 pm here on Tuesday, fire department officials said. As many as eight persons are said to be injured.
Though there was no immediate report of any casualty, officials feared that crackers worth lakhs of rupees have been damaged in the blaze. Eyewitnesses said the fire might have been triggered by an electrical short-circuit.
A spokesman of the fire department said several fire tenders are engaged in dousing the flames. Vehicles of shop-keepers have also been gutted in the fire. The cracker market is organised every year during Diwali.
