A major fire broke out in the slum cluster of the Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar area of Samaypur Badli in Outer Delhi on Friday, due to which around 60 to 70 jhuggis were gutted down, leaving many people homeless. However, no injuries or causality were reported.

According to the fire department officials, the fire broke out at around 1 pm. Around 20 fire tender vehicles were rushed to the spot in order to douse the flames.

The fire was extinguished after one hour. The fire broke out because of short-circuit in an overhead electric wire.

According to the police, three PCR vans reached the spot along with 8-10 special staff of the Delhi Police. Medical teams of the BJRM hospital also rushed to the spot to assist the authorities.

“I was in the kitchen when I heard people shouting. When we came out, there was smoke all around.

“I ran out with my kids and left everything behind. Till the time fire tenders reached the spot, fire had spread and more than 50 houses including mine had caught fire,” lamented a local.

According to other eyewitnesses, the fire spread quickly as the houses were very close to one another.
