Mahasweta Devi put on ventilator support

Veteran author Mahasweta Devi was put on ventilator support at a private nursing home in the city after her condition deteriorated on Thursday morning. Doctors in the hospital described her condition  critical as she suffered a renal failure accompanied with various other complications. She was admitted to the hospital more than one and half months ago with urinary tract infection. She has been undergoing dialysis as both of her kidneys were not functioning properly. She is a diabetic.

Dr Samarjit Nashkar, head of the six-member medical board formed for her treatment said that her condition is critical and hence she has been put on ventilator support. Strong antibiotic medication was being administered to the patient and she has been put on renal support.

She had been suffering various age related ailments for a long time including urine and blood infection. Her condition deteriorated from Tuesday night and in the last few days she is not responding well to the treatment.

Hospital authorities said that from Thursday morning, the 90-year-old writer who dedicated her life to the welfare of the tribals and authored many books on them was suffering from respiratory distress. Dialysis was performed on her on Thursday. Her condition is stated to be critical. 

The members of the medical board have been closely monitoring her condition. Mahasweta Devi is a recipient of Jnanpith, Padma Vibhushan and Magsaysay awards.
