With just about a fortnight left for the polls, it would be worthwhile to watch whether Rao would recommend central rule in the state.
With a five-corner fight on after BJP-Shiv Sena and Congress-NCP splits, the political situation in the state remains in a state of flux. There were rumours that Sena boss Udhav Thackeray may make up with his estranged cousin and MNS leader Raj Thackeray to keep other parties like NCP, Congress and BJP at bay. There are speculations that both MNS and Shiv Sena may join hands in the name of Marathi sentiment to keep their base strong in the state. Party insider claimed that MNS may extend support to Sena wherever it can make a difference and the same will be expected from the
Sena leaders.
Though both the parties have officially denied reports, informed sources claimed that the call was made from Matoshri, Uddhav’s residence, to Raj. It is the second call made to an ailing MNS chief in a fortnight from Uddhav and it is expected that both of them might go for some arrangements to secure more seats in the local poll scheduled on 15 October.
It was learnt that Sena leaders are worried after parting ways with the BJP because it is in power in 12 municipal corporations in Maharashtra with support from the ruling party in the centre.
Meanwhile, after tendering his resignation, Chavan said: ‘The NCP has decided to end our alliance within an hour of the BJP ending its alliance with the Shiv Sena. Maybe they’ve found new friends. We may find out in three or four days who these friends are.’ There are speculations that Sharad Pawar’s NCP - which was Congress’ ally for 15 years – is holding secret talks with the BJP over post poll alliances.
Meanwhile, late on Friday evening, the BJP announced the names of 287 candidates (out of 288) for Maharashtra assembly polls. Some of the important leaders in the list are Eknathrao Khadse who is contesting from Mukhtainagar and state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis who is contesting from Nagpur South West.
