With AIIMS Director R C Deka retiring on Monday, the institute body has forwarded the name of Dr M C Misra, chief of trauma centre, for appoitment to the post. The institute body chaired by union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad recommended his named to the PMO from among five shortlisted candidates for the final nod.
Misra, also the head of the surgery department, had played a key role in the treatment of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student, who was gang-raped on 16 December. The five shortlisted candidates included head of cardiothoracic surgery Dr Balram Airan, head of pediatrics Dr V K Paul, head of gastroenterology Dr S K Acharya, head of pharmacology and AIIMS spokesperson Dr Y K Gupta. The institute had advertised its post for the director two months ago and around 70 applications were received from doctors based in India and abroad.
