Lucknow’s iconic Coffee House locked

Update: 2013-06-03 23:48 GMT
The historical Indian Coffee House here is in trouble once again. It has been closed by the police on Sunday due to a dispute between the members of the society managing the day-to-day affairs.

The coffee house, situated in the heart of the city on Hazratganj crossing, and the Centre point of several intellectuals, politicians and journalists, was shut down yesterday.
It was closed for a couple of months earlier due to the same problem and was thrown open a few months back.

Police said a dispute of claim on the Coffee House between Aruna Singh and Anand Kumar Singh created the problems which lead to its closure. Both Aruna and Anand have been claiming that they were secretary of Indian Coffee House Workers Cooperative Society Limited, and now the matter is referred to the deputy registrar level who will sort out the problem, before the Coffee House is opened once again.

Aruna, who was technically running the coffee house, has alleged that Anand ‘manipulated’ the police for its closure. The intellectuals and the politicians who used to sit there in the evening have criticised the police’s action.

Senior Congress leader Amir Haider, who is a regular visitor of the Coffee House alleged that the role of the Hazratganj police was suspicious in this matter.

‘Police should allow to run the Coffee house, whoever has the legal order,’ he said, while adding that they will talk to UP minister Rajendra Choudhury, also a regular visitor, to intervene into the matter.

Former UP and Uttarkhand chief minister Narain Dutt Tiwari, former Governor Sibte Razi, UP assembly speaker Mata Prasad Pandey, Lucknow MP Lalji Tandon and several sitting judges were among the prominent customers, who attended the sitting of the intellectuals in the Coffee House, recently.

A book on Lucknow’s coffee house, written by a journalist, was released recently.
