Update: 2015-05-26 21:08 GMT
Walk into the city of Lucknow and one can see large boards all over the city with slogan inscribed: <g data-gr-id="20">Aap</g> camera ki <g data-gr-id="21">nazar</g> <g data-gr-id="22">mein</g> <g data-gr-id="23">hain</g>. Adding a new feather to its cap, Lucknow is India’s first ‘CCTV City’. What’s more, there are around 3,500 cameras installed in the city to keep an eye on the criminals.

These CCTVs aid in two parallel security projects in the city: one for monitoring street crimes and the other, centred on traffic surveillance. Under the Traffic Surveillance Project, around 280 <g data-gr-id="24">High resolution</g> cameras have already been installed, each costing approximately upto between 1 lakh to 3 lakh.

Most of the city hospitals, schools and offices are already well covered by surveillance cameras. The mechanism is very simple. The police department consolidates all CCTV feeds into a centralised control and command centres in Gomti Nagar. These feeds are recorded up to one to two months. So, a mere <g data-gr-id="26">complain</g> can help the police to hunt the archive and get the details of the crime quickly. This will not only help to save time and labour, but will also assist the police to join the bits and pieces of the case.
