LPG price hiked, put on hold after row

Update: 2012-11-02 02:13 GMT
It was an action-packed day of dramatic developments for the country’s oil and gas sector. The day started  with the price of non-subsidised cooking gas, which consumers buy beyond the cheaper quota of six cylinders, being hiked by Rs 26.50 to Rs 922 per cylinder.

Then, after a day of fierce criticism from both the ruling UPA’s allies and opponents, the government late at night put on hold the increase in price of liquified natural gas (LPG) cylinders.

The critics included West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Agriculture Minister and Nationalist Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar.

‘The price hike has been put on hold,’ said a top oil company official. ‘The latest increase in non-subsidised cooking gas has been reversed and it will be available at old rates.’

The government had in September restricted the supply of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders to six per household per year.
