After being involved in numerous controversies due to his comments on social-networking website, Twitter, the writer and diplomat turned politician has been caught in a new controversy with reports of an alleged affair with Pakistani columnist Mehr Tarar.
The lady in question though expressed surprise over the sudden attention she got. Later, Tharoor clarified that his account had been hacked. ‘Sorry folks, my @Twitter account has been hacked & will be temporarily deactivated. Bear with me while we solve this,’ tweeted the union minister on Wednesday.
Mehr’s Twitter profile says she is a former Op-ed Editor, Daily Times in Pakistan and also a columnist. Her account carries the alleged tweets and retweets in which Tharoor professes his love for her.
Mehr tweeted saying: ‘Okay. What’s going on? Who’s tweeting to me? I had an ‘affair’ with Shashi Tharoor and he’s tweeting to me??? How does that work?’
The tweets, which created a storm on Tharoor’s Twitter page, about their affair were: ‘@mehrtarar I love you, Shashi Tharoor. And I go while in love with you, irrevocably, irreversibly, hamesha.
Bleeding, but always your Mehr.’ Also ‘Shashi. I’m not crying any more. I’m not falling to pieces. I’m more lucid than ever. How little I knew you became visible to me.@mehrtarar.’ ‘@mehartarar says if you don’t end me the bbms by the time I wake up, I will get your message loud and louder. That is @sptvrock ‘s [Sunanda Pushkar’s twitter id] bbms.’ One rather interesting one reads: ‘You unfollowed me. You don’t RT me and you don’t answer me on twitter. I can live with your favourites. I have your personal validation.’
Sunanda Pushkar’s Twitter handle had tweets that added fuel to the fire - ‘I am sending @mehrtars bbm msgs to the works to see what a horrible woman she is and how she is stalking my husband’ reads a tweet on her account’s page.
In 2009, Tharoor held office as minister of state for external affairs and faced the heat after a furore was caused over his tweet in which he mentioned that he was prepared to travel in the ‘cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows’.
After the ‘cattle class’ comment, trouble rose again after for the Thiruvananthapuram MP after Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi tweeted details of the stakeholders in the new Kochi IPL team that was sold on 21 March for Rs 1,530 crore in 2010.
After naming Tharoor’s wife Sunanda, Modi alleged he was asked not to check the background of controversial buyers. ‘I was told by him (Tharoor) not to get into who owns Rendezvous, especially Sunanda. Why?’
The IPL controversy struck in April and Tharoor wed Sunanda in August 2010. It was a fairy-tale wedding of sorts, as both had kept their past marriages behind and started life afresh. But the Delhi circuit has been abuzz with reports of trouble in the Tharoor’s paradise.
Reports have surfaced of Shashi being in shock after Sunanda lost her temper with a journalist, when she saw the minister interacting with him and told him to back off. ‘This is why I hate the media... I have thrown liquor at Arnab Goswami. You think I can’t do that to you?’ Sunanda Tharoor reportedly screamed at Khaleej Times journalist Muaz Shabandri. As per reports after this tiff Tharoor ‘quickly slipped away’.
