Lotus to bloom today sans Sena

It would be a minority government which would sworn-in under the leadership of BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai on Friday. With the Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray expressing regret over not attending the grand swearing in function at the Wankhede Stadium to be attended among others by prime minister Narendra Modi, it has become clear that the two estranged partners have not been able to make up for their bitter parting, days before the polls.

BJP general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Thursday said that no Sena leader will be inducted in the new Maharashtra government during the swearing-in-ceremony at Wankhede stadium. The BJP, which has 121 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, needs 24 more legislators to reach the magic figure. One of the BJP legislators Govind Rathod (elected from Nanded district) died recently, reducing the party’s strength to 121.

Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, while inviting Fadnavis to form the government, has asked him to prove amjority on the floor of the house by14 November. With the support of small parties and independents, the BJP’s tally might inch towards majority but still fall short of the numbers.

On Thursday morning, the independent MLAs along with Fadnavis had a meeting with union ministers Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari in the national capital. With the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), with 41 MLAs, having offered unconditional support to the BJP on the day election results was declared and sticking by it, the government could well survive the first trial of strength.

Though Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray climbed down from his earlier position by sounding reconciliatory note in the party’s mouthpiece ‘Samna’ to appease Modi, the BJP continued to strike a stringent note.

Nearly, 40,000 people are expected to attend the swearing in ceremony including top industrialists
and Bollywood stars, where Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao would administer oath of office.

Apart from Fadnavis, a small cabinet of around ten ministers, including state BJP core committee members Eknath Khadse, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Vinod Tawde and Pankaja Munde, are likely to be sworn in.
