‘Loopholes’ in Chhattisgarh nun rape probe: NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday pointed out “deficiencies” into the probe of a nun’s alleged rape in Chhattisgarh in June and sought an action-taken report from top authorities of the state government on its recommendations within six weeks.

The Commission has given <g data-gr-id="13">specific</g> set of recommendations to the state Chief Secretary, <g data-gr-id="14">DGP</g> and Raipur SP, following an <g data-gr-id="15">enquiry</g>, which found “several loopholes” in the handling of the case.

It observed that the local police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) but failed to get the victim’s statement recorded before the judicial magistrate and said proper penal sections based on the allegations of the complainant were not invoked while registering the case.

“Further, the local police, in absence of a protocol or a procedure, did not take any measures to secure the scene of crime nor it took blood, urine or other body fluid samples to find out the nature and composition of pills alleged to have been popped up in the mouth of the victim by her assailants,” the Commission said.
