LG okays age relaxation for guest teachers

Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has reportedly conveyed his consent for giving age relaxation to the guest teachers for permanent appointment in Delhi government schools but denied any experience-based weightage.

The issue of experience-based weightage is a major obstacle for appointment of around 17,000 teachers in Delhi government schools.

“The LG informed that the Solicitor General of India has opined that it would not be legally tenable to count their experience before their selection as teachers on permanent basis,” said Vijender Gupta, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly after meeting the LG on behalf of agitating teachers.

The Leader of Opposition has also suggested to the LG that the Chief Minister should be asked to have an all party meet on the issue under his chairmanship to find out possibility of solution of this contentious issue.

“LG agreed that on selection, their experience as guest teachers would be counted in their service,” said Gupta. Earlier, deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had written a letter to Vijender Gupta asking him to talk to the LG on the issue as BJP is in power in the Centre. Gupta has also suggested Delhi government to provide free coaching to guest teachers so that they could qualify the exams.

Gupta also said that the services of 17 guest teachers whose services were terminated for participating in the protests, demonstration and dharnas highlighting their grievances during April must be regularised.

Delhi government spokesperson, however, said the issue is only of weightage for guest teachers and the matter of giving age relaxation is an agreed position between the Delhi government and LG.
