The police have so far failed to track <g data-gr-id="45">Javeid</g>, despite conducting raids at the residences of both
<g data-gr-id="90">Javeid</g> (18) and Faizan (19). While the former outwitted the jail guards, the later – who got his leg injured while scaling one of the walls – was caught during the action.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report seeking clarification regarding the <g data-gr-id="54">jail break</g> from the prison authorities. Later in the day, soon after the Tihar authorities initiated a probe into the matter by themselves, the Lieutenant Governor also ordered a magisterial enquiry into it, which is reportedly to be conducted by the district magistrate of South-west district.
However, the AAP government <g data-gr-id="44">favoured</g> a probe by the Divisional Commissioner (West district). Delhi Home Minister Satyendra <g data-gr-id="43">Jain,</g> said the probe should be entrusted to Divisional Commissioner (west district) BS <g data-gr-id="41">Jaglan</g> as Tihar Jail falls under his jurisdiction.
He said the state government was yet to issue a written inquiry order. On Monday morning, one police team reached Javed’s <g data-gr-id="51">second floor</g> residence at South Delhi’s Neb Sarai, another raided Faizan’s shanty at Madanpur Khadar, looking if <g data-gr-id="60">Javeid</g> was hiding there. When they both failed, the cops started to round up <g data-gr-id="61">Javeid’s</g> old associates, said a police source.
Tihar officials also claimed that they shall try to submit its report to the Home Ministry in around two days. On their part, the probe is being conducted by the <g data-gr-id="42">superintendant</g> of jail number 2, said a source.
According to Tihar officials, the duo first scaled two walls which were around 13 feet high each. But the third wall was 16 feet high and two feet in breadth. When they could not scale that, they drilled a hole in it and then again scaled the fourth wall which was around 13 feet high to land in the canal adjacent to the prison’s peripheral walls. But Faizan sustained an injury in scaling the last wall and developed a cold feet soon after diving into the canal. While he was caught, <g data-gr-id="62">Javeid</g> swam fast and escaped. The two of them were lodged in a special ‘Roza’ ward in Jail Number 7.
Jail authorities had created this ward for inmates observing fast during the Islamic Holy month of Ramzan. Faizan and <g data-gr-id="64">Javeid</g>, both of whom were under trials were accused in burglary cases and had become friends during their stay at Tihar.
According to sources in Tihar, there <g data-gr-id="58">were</g> a total of 21 inmates who were kept in the ‘Roza’ ward to facilitate their fasting. On Saturday morning, all of them were there during the morning roll call. But the two were not found during the roll call which took place in the evening. Prison authorities pressed the panic button and a hunt was launched in and around the prison during which Faizan was caught.
However, prison authorities informed <g data-gr-id="49">police</g> only after more than 24 hours of the incident. A case under the relevant sections of <g data-gr-id="48">law</g> was registered at West Delhi’s Hari Nagar police station around 11 on Sunday night, the source added.
“It seems that <g data-gr-id="53">Javeid</g>, who is a seasoned criminal, used Faizan to escape from the prison. He needed somebody to scale high walls and had assured Faizan of taking care of his expenses and other logistics once they escape,” said an official.
