Let coal mining state monopoly end: Prabhu

Update: 2014-09-27 01:20 GMT
Suresh Prabhu,  chairman of the Government’s Advisory Group for Integrated Development of Power, Coal and Renewable Energy, said that the Centre should call an all-party meeting to establish political consensus on ending the public sector monopoly of coal mining and opening up the sector to private players.

'This is the best opportunity for the country to revisit all these issues that have been pushed under the carpet,’ said Prabhu.  The coal mining sector has been under tight state control ever since the mines’ nationalisation in the 1970s.

However, exceptions were made for captive mines — where coal was used only for a dedicated project such as power generations.
