“We will do politics but after five years. But it is important that first we address the issues of the areas we represent, be it civic, health or infrastructure. The people have reposed their faith in us and now its our turn to work for them and evaluate ourselves,” said Lekhi in a function organised to felicitate her for being appointed as Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for Delhi Cantonment.  She extorted the Cantonment Board to shift focus to waste management.

“The initial part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Delhi Cantonment focused more on sanitising and cleaning our road, parks and other public spaces. Now, the focus needs to be more on strengthening solid waste management,” she added.

She congratulated Delhi Cantonment Board for being ranked 15th cleanest city in India by the Urban Development Ministry, ahead of the 16th position of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

“Recycle, reuse and reduce of waste should be the mantra for cantonment area. Segregation of waste at point of generation should be encouraged and sewage treatment plants should be built, so that the waste generated in the area need not be taken to already overburdened landfills. Efforts to convert waste to diesel, electricity and CNG should be undertaken,” she added.

Delhi Cantonment is one of the three statutory towns that make up the National Capital Territory of Delhi with an area of 42.5 sq km. With a population of 1,10,000, Delhi Cantonment is managed by the Delhi Cantonment Board, which along with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the NDMC take care of civic amenities in the national Capital.

“The board has been emphasising on solid waste management. As of now, 20,000 houses are covered under door-to-door collection of waste and for the purpose the Board has engaged 16 special auto-rickshaws. Acquisition of more such auto-rickshaws and trucks is in the pipeline. We want to make Delhi Cantonment the cleanest town in India,” said B Reddy Sankar Babu, CEO DCB.
