Teachers and the students belonging to the Right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-wing outfits, on Wednesday, indulged in sloganeering outside the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in Delhi University campus. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was addressing the students on the development model of Gujarat in the college.
The Left wing protesters tried their best not to let Modi enter the venue of lecture. Presence of a large posse of 600 policemen and security measures taken by the college administration, however, ensured safe passage for the Gujarat CM.
Police even resorted to mild lathi-charge and water cannons to disperse the protesters, who tried to pull down the barricades and gain entry into the college.
After Modi’s entry into the college, the two groups– pro-Modi and anti-Modi– continued with their slogan shouting outside the college.
Supporters belonging to the ABVP shouted, ‘Humara neta kaisa ho, Narendra Modi jaisa ho (What kind of leader do we want, just like Modi)’ to counter demands of Left wingers to send Modi back.
The protesters wore black clothes and ghost masks, remonstrating and protesting with the slogans ‘Modi go back’. They belonged to All India Students’ Association, Students Federation of India and the All India Students Federation – all Left-wing unions. They resented Modi’s role in Gujarat riots.
‘It is a shame that the person under whose leadership the horrific Gujarat genocide took place is being allowed to use the legitimacy of academic spaces such as Delhi University for his fascist ends and his Prime Ministerial ambitions,’ said Sunny Kumar, AISA leader from DU. He added, ‘The progressive democratic voices in Delhi cannot let this happen, and so we are protesting.’
‘The democratic-minded students, teachers and people of Delhi will never forgive and forget Modi’s real face, while the victims of the Gujarat massacre are still crying for justice. They will continue to foil Modi’s farcical image-building exercises, in Delhi and elsewhere,’ said Akbar Chawdhary, AISA leader from JNU.
Several protesters, including the JNUSU joint secretary Piyush Raj, AISA activists Shafi and Chintu and SFI activist Kopal, were arrested by the police and detained at Maurice Nagar police station.
According to ABVP functionary Sanjeev K Tiwari, ‘Such attempts to browbeat Modi would not bear fruit. The presence of a large number of people inside the auditorium and outside to hear and support Modi bears testimony to his popularity. Such protests only add to his growing stature.’
