Faced with a rising number of snatching instances in the national capital, police in south Delhi has come up with a unique idea to nab the culprits.

The police has deployed female officers at points from which it has received the maximum complaints of snatching to lure the criminals and arrest them.

‘Female police officers in civil dress are being posted at spots from where a high number of snatching cases were reported according to the data available in criminal records,’ an officer informed requesting anonymity.

The honey traps are made to wear artificial jewellery such as chain and earrings. They are also made to carry handbags and purses to lure the snatchers.

‘We are sure the that once the snatchers see these women with jewellery and fancy bags, they will try to snatch them. It is exactly at this moment that we aim to catch them,’ the officer said.

In the past few months, police stations falling under south Delhi have received an increasing number of complaints about snatching incidents.

The drive kicked off late in September after Bhola Shankar Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (south), held a special meeting with the station head officers of seventeen police stations in south Delhi.

‘We have deployed beat officers (both male and female) at the gates of colonies especially in the posh areas such as Lodhi Colony, RK Puram, Hauz Khas, Saket and Mehrauli. Along with the security guards hired by the residents, poice officers are available for more than twenty hours to keep a check on any criminal activity in the area,’ Jaiswal added.

When asked about the crime rate in south Delhi, Jaiswal said, ‘The trend of heinous crimes in the district has fallen as a result of which we are focusing on the street crimes to nab the local criminals who might commit big crimes in future.’
