A professor in the University Institute of Law and Management Studies (UILMS) has been arrested for allegedly molesting and sexually harassing a 22-year-old student. The professor is also in his twenties.
The accused was arrested on Monday, after the third-year law student filed a complaint against him at Sector-40 police station in Gurgaon.
The victim told the police that the professor had made her an offer of good marks in the examinations, in return for sexual favours from her.
‘When I refused his offer, the professor who has been identified as Surender Singh, called me at his residence on one or the other pretext and molested and harassed me whenever I went there,’ the victim told the police.
On Monday, the girl approached the police station and filed a complaint against him. In her complaint, the victim told the police of every incident when she was sexually abused by the professor in the past two years. ‘After receiving her complaint, a raid was conducted at his house and he was arrested,’ the official said.
A case under sections -354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the professor.
After word got around of the professor’s arrest, UILMS students disrupted traffic outside the campus for several hours on Monday morning. They also raised slogans against the college management.
A student, who didn’t wish to be named said, ‘The victim had lodged a complaint with the college management on Saturday, but they did not take any action against the accused professor. Finally, she had to approach the local police station for help.’
