Lankan Navy confirms arrest of 110 Indian fishermen

The Sri Lankan Navy has confirmed the arrest of 110 Indian fishermen on the charges of violating the international maritime boundary. Media Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that the fishermen and their 15 fishing vessels were captured near the coast of Mullaitivu. These fishermen and their vessels have been escorted to the Trincomalee harbour. The fishermen will be handed over to the Trincomalee police for being produced before the Magistrate for remand tomorrow, he added.

Meanwhile, a senior officer of the Indian High Commission has been rushed to Trincomalee in an effort to ensure an early release of the fishermen. The case of 32 fishermen who were arrested earlier, will also come up for hearing at the Magistrate’s court on Thursday. Before on Wednesday’s capture, 87 Indian fishermen were in Sri Lankan custody on similar charges.
