Update: 2013-05-07 12:22 GMT
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered a vigilance probe into the alleged kickbacks given to officials for awarding contracts of Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA), Yamuna Expressway and Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (RNN) to Kasana Builders.

The government’s decision was spurred by recommendation of Income Tax (IT) department, which hinted at fishy deal in land purchase, government officials said on Monday.

As per an UP government communiqué Akhilesh Yadav ordered the probe by Vigilance Establishment to confirm about the role of officials who collected huge-sums from Kasana Builders to award lucrative contracts in GDA, Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority and RNN. The contracts were given during the previous BSP regime.

The communique  further confirmed that the IT sleuths wrote to chief secretary Jawed Usmani informing him that during Mayawati’s reign as chief minister (2007 to 2012), officers of the above government organisation collected money given as ‘graft’.

Further legal and departmental action will be initiated against the officials as per findings of the  Vigilance Establishment, official said.

Earlier the IT department raided five business and residential locations in Noida and Greater Noida of some officials and houses of Kasana Builders on 11 May 2012. The raids were carried on at  KP Singh’s residence at Sector 40, Noida (posted in Greater Noida Authority), RP Burman’s resident at Sector 50 in Noida (senior accountant in Noida Authority), Kasana Builder’s owner home in Sector 40 at Noida. Later two more locations in Greater Noida were raided including the houses of Lalit Vikram (GM, Finance) and Ravindra Tongar (GM Property) who were working with  the Greater Noida Authority.

The IT officials claimed that they unearthed disproportionate assets possessed by the officials  and claimed that undue advantage was accorded by them to Kasana Builders. On basis of the findings, the IT later reported it to the UP government pressing for an inquiry against the officials.
