L-G appoints Sushil Kumar as city’s ambassador, doubles sports budget

Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung has doubled the budgetary allocation for sports in Delhi from Rs 22 crore to Rs 44 crore. He said this on the occasion of felicitation of sportspersons who won medals during the CWG 2014. It was also announced that CWG Gold medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar has been made the brand ambassodor of Delhi.

Jung said, ‘It is a matter of great pride that eight Delhi sports-persons have brought laurels for the country in CWG 2014.’

He further said that the performance of Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt and Amit Dahiya has made India proud.

‘From the last Olympic games, India has progressed. Now, we should do whatever is possible for the sports. We don’t have any shortage of talent. It is our responsibility to do our best for betterment of sports in the country,’ Jung said.

He also emphasised on building stadiums in the city. ‘You may not like sports but you should play. Because if you are playing regularly, your children and the younger generation will be inspired,” he added.

Speaking on this occasion, Delhi’s chief scretary SK Srivastava said that the government of Delhi is fully committed to support the emerging sportspersons.
