Kolkata: A woman was killed while four others including her husband were injured when a cycle van was hit by a speeding motorcycle. Two youths on the motorcycle escaped unhurt.
The incident took place on Saturday night near Bhojerhat bridge in South 24-Parganas.
Police said they were travelling on a cycle van along the canal road when a bike had hit them. One Asha Mondal, who was sitting in the front, suffered fatal injuries and she was declared brought dead after being taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital on
late Saturday night.
The victim's husband was among the three who suffered injuries. It was learnt that the deceased's husband was pulling the cycle van when the accident occurred. All the injured persons were taken to the same hospital for treatment. The deceased was returning home after consulting a local doctor, police said.
The incident triggered tension among the locals some of whom alleged that some bikers often ride at a very high speed, resulting in accidents.
The matter was brought to the notice of the local police administration but no major steps were taken to crack down on bikers who often race with each other in the area, alleged the locals.
According to the police, two youths identified as Jasimuddin Mollah and Anarul Mollah were riding on the bike. They fled the spot immediately after the incident. The locals rescued the injured victims and rushed them to the hospital. According to the hospital sources, the injuries of some of the victims are serious.
After being informed police reached the spot and started a probe in this regard. Police are investigating if the youths were in an inebriated state at the time of the accident. They are conducting raids to nab the accused.
