Transport dept changes syllabus for motor training schools

The new syllabus prepared by the state transport department, in assistance with IIT Kharagpur, for the motor training schools
would be introduced from April this year, state transport minister Suvendu Adhikari said in the Assembly.
The minister told the house that entire procedure of issuance of licenses would be made more stringent to check road accidents. CCTVs will be installed at all the training centres to monitor and record the steps of getting a driving license.
The new initiative will also fix the accountability of motor vehicle inspectors. In case of an accident, the transport department will investigate if the driver was issued license according to the norms.
The new modules that would be given to the training schools would in three languages — Bengali, English and Hindi, Adhikari said in the Assembly.
He also said that the transport department will also take some steps to stop drunken driving and bike racing which often lead to fatal accidents.
It may be mentioned that the state government decided to make the procedure of issuance of license more stringent.
The decision was taken following some accidents in the city involving the pool cars. The transport department carried out a surveillance to monitor the condition of vehicles. The department also set some guidelines for the bus drivers.
During his speech, the minister also stressed on the importance of producing more efficient drivers and the procedure to get a license would be made more difficult so that people do get the licenses sitting at home, the minister said.
Steps would also be taken to check the overloading of vehicles. Around Rs 53 crores would be allotted to install various equipments in the vehicles to control the speed.
He announced that ten more mini buses routes would soon be created in the city. The minister also said that his department will soon give registrations to the e-rickshaws so that they can be brought under insurance coverage. More than 4,000 e-rickshaws have already been given registration.
The minister said that budget allotment on his department has increased by 10 per cent in the year 2017-18. The revenue collection of the department has also increased by 25 per cent.
