Kolkata: Train services in the Sealdah Budge Budge section resumed on Sunday afternoon, after suspension of services from 10.10 pm on Saturday for construction of the new level-crossing gate.

"The traffic and power block between Ballygunge and Budge Budge due to construction of the new level-crossing gate between New Alipore and Majerhat had started on Saturday night. Our engineers have worked on a war footing and finished the construction of the level-crossing. The work ended at 3.25 pm on Sunday and normal train services resumed from 4.03 pm," said a senior spokesperson of Eastern Railway.

Three Up and two Down EMU locals were cancelled on Saturday and 16 pairs of locals on Sunday, for construction of the level-crossing.

According to sources in ER, the railways will come up with boom barrier for regulating the traffic over the railway tracks. "Work for the boom will commence soon and we hope to finish it before the pujas. We will also come up with a temporary cabin with lodging facilities for a cabin man and some other officials for assisting him. These officials will be responsible for regulating traffic movement in the level-crossing" an ER official said, assuring that there will be no more suspension of train services.

The state government is also busy creating a new road on the southward extension of Alipore Avenue till Humayun Kabir Sarani in New Alipore that will connect Behala and Alipore. "The bailey bridge on the canal will be placed soon after the civil work for the roads gets done. We are hopeful of completing work before the pujas," an engineer of Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) said.

The bailey bridge on Chetla Canal and the level-crossing will connect the southward extension of Alipore Avenue to Block G in New Alipore, from where it would move around 600 metres to connect with Humayun Kabir Sarani. It will help city-bound vehicles from Behala reach Raja Santosh Road.

"Small vehicles from parts of Behala and even New Alipore will be directed down this new road during the morning rush hour. In the evening the flow may be reversed," a senior official of Kolkata Police's Traffic department said.
