Kolkata: In view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress is going to make extensive use of digital media to make people aware of the various programmes taken up by the state government and the fake viral videos that are often uploaded on social media without verification.

The initiative has been taken up by the party's youth wing president and MP Abhishek Banerjee. He will be the keynote speaker at the All India Trinamool Congress Digital Conclave, which is scheduled to be held on September 10 at Nazrul Mancha. All MPs and MLAs are expected to take part in the conclave.

It may be mentioned that in the political rallies and administrative review meetings, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly stressed on remaining active on social media.

She has urged party leaders and workers, particularly the students, to be active on social media and counter fake viral videos that are uploaded without verification. Different projects taken up by the state government will also be highlighted using the medium.

Mamata Banerjee herself is very active on social media and always tweets on important issues. She had criticised and tweeted on the anti-people policies of the BJP government, from note ban to the incomplete publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

It may be recalled that within 15 minutes after the Centre had issued a ban on high-value notes on November 8, 2017, Banerjee had tweeted, criticising the Centre for its "draconian" decision that would affect common people.

Later, all the Opposition parties, including noted economists, had echoed her voice and criticised the decision which had affected the entire country's growth.

Following Abhishek's initiative, a meeting was held at Moulali Yuba Kendra in June on the use of digital media, which was attended by several Trinamool workers and leaders.

Welcoming Abhishek's move, Partha Chatterjee, the party's secretary general, said the conclave is going to benefit the leaders, many of whom do not know the use of digital media.

Subrata Mukherjee, state minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, said: "The conclave is going to benefit the leaders and workers equally. Time has come for the leaders to upgrade themselves and make people aware of the projects taken up by the state government."
