Four new water treatment projects would come up in the municipal areas of Howrah, Murshidabad, Nadia and South 24 Parganas at an estimated cost of Rs 241 crore.
State Municipal Affairs minister Firhad Hakim on Friday announced the projects which will supply filtered water to vast parts under these municipal areas. The four new projects have been approved recently by a committee headed by the Chief Secretary of the state. The Howrah Municipal Corporation and KMDA have initiated a jetty water treatment plant of 20 million gallon capacity at a cost of Rs 70 crore in Howrah.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given approval to construct a water treatment plant and also an Eco Park at Uttarpara in Hooghly which was earlier demarcated for setting up a film city. The piece of land where the film city was supposed to come up has been returned to the KMDA after the project was scrapped.
The two new projects would come up on this land which would immensely benefit the locals. The detailed project reports for the water treatment plant and the proposed Eco Park in Uttarpara are yet to be prepared. The water treatment plant would cater to large areas in Uttarpara, Hakim maintained. The second phase of the upcoming treatment plant would be completed in Krishnanagar.
The total cost of the project is Rs 65 crore among which around Rs 50 crore was sanctioned under the first phase. A 28 million gallon water treatment plant will be set up in Jangipur in Murshidabad at an approximate cost of Rs 81 crore. The Municipal Engineering Department will complete the projects.
Another project will come up at Bansberia in Hooghly where Rs 75 crore would be spent for the water treatment project having a capacity of purifying around 22 million gallon of water. It is believed that a huge number of people from these districts would be immensely benefitted after the completion of the proposed water treatment plants.
