Separate suicide attempts at two Metro stations

Two persons attempted suicide at two different Metro stations on Sunday affecting the Metro services for nearly 40 minutes.

Police said that the first incident took place at Esplanade Metro station at around 3.31 pm when a person suddenly threw himself before a Dum Dum-bound train when it was entering the Esplanade station. 

The driver of the train applied emergency breaks when he saw the man jumping on to the tracks from the platform, police said. 

The police are yet to trace the identity of the injured person.

Immediately after the incident, Metro railway authorities switched off the power connection in the third line of the track and RPF personnel and other staff members rushed to the spot. 

They lifted the man and took him to the SSKM Hospital.

A senior Metro official said that Metro services in both the up and down line between Maidan and Esplanade stations were stopped following the incident. 

The passengers were seriously inconvenienced due to the incident. 

The Metro railway authorites managed to provide Metro services between Maidan and Kabi Subhas and from Central to Noapara between 3.30 pm to 4.10 pm. According to the Metro official, the services were resumed at around 4.09 pm. 

Truncated services were operated during that time, the official added. 

Another incident took place at around 6.10 pm on Sunday at Gitanjali Metro station when a 19-year-old Niladri Karmakar, a resident of Ganguly Bagan area of Netaji Nagarjumped in front of a moving train on down line. 

The RPF rushed to the spot and rescued the victim. 

The victim sustained injuries on his body and was rushed to the MR Bangur Hospital for treatment.
