Two more persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the incident in which residents from Great Britain were duped after their bank account details were misused by some youth from Bidhannagar.
The accused had called the victims over phone from Bidhannagar posing as technical support experts from Great Britain itself and had managed to get access to the computer systems of the accused after getting their details. The accused used to contact them using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology which is again a threat to the country's security. They convinced them to get different documents of their bank accounts. Using the same they transferred money from their bank accounts to their own. The police had earlier arrested three youth — Kush Kumar, Bhaskar Dutta and Sumit Mishra — in this connection a few days ago.
In the wee hours on Wednesday, the police had conducted a raid at Baguiati and its neighbouring areas after receiving a tip-off. 28-year-old Sankar Narayan Shaw, a resident of Haridevpur and 35-year-old Sanjit Singh were arrested. The police had come to know about Sankar and Sanjit after interrogating those who were arrested earlier. The police suspect that there are some more members involved. Efforts are on to get more details about those still absconding. It may be mentioned that they had managed to transfer more than Rs 2 crore from the bank accounts of many residents of Great Britain. The police are also trying to find out as to how they managed to use the VoIP system to contact residents of the country. Probe is also on to find out whether any other such racket is still operating in Salt Lake area, using VoIP technology.
