Promoter held for demolishing portion of school

Bidhannagar Police have arrested a promoter from Chinar Park area for his alleged involvement in the demolition of a portion of a school building after the authorities lodged a complaint against the accused.

The students of Niladebi Memorial Institute, a private school situated at the Dashodron area of Baguiati found that a portion of the school was damaged. It was alleged that a local promoter Mijanur Rahaman was giving pressure to the school authorities as he wanted to buy the school property. But the school authorities had categorically told the accused that the school building, where many students from the nearby areas come to study, cannot be sold out to a promoter for constructing residential complexes. The accused wanted to construct buildings on the school plot.

A case was filed in the court in this regard and the matter was still under consideration of the court. Having found no option, the accused decided to bring down the school building during the night so that no protests are raised by the local people and the school authorities. The accused allegedly engaged some people to demolish the school building and they carried out the demolition work on Friday night.

After seeing the damaged portion of the school, the students of the school and the teachers staged demonstration on the road. After being informed, police reached the spot. The students and teachers staged a demonstration in front of the police. The local Councillor also rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Some of the guardians of the students alleged that a section police personnel were also involved in the incident.
