Portion of old building in Tiljala collapses, none injured

Tension ran high at Gustia area of Tiljala on Thursday afternoon after a portion of an old building collapsed.

Fortunately, no casualty was reported in the incident. Some local residents told the police that they heard a loud thud on Thursday and found that a portion of the old building collapsed.

Soon, the residents initiated a rescue operation. Initially, they thought that some person might have been trapped under the debris.

After being informed, the police and disaster management team rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation.

Police cordoned off the entire area, while the disaster management team entered the building and rescued the people residing in the building.

Based on preliminary investigation, police suspect that poor maintenance of the building might have led its collapse. After carrying out a search operation, the joint forces of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the disaster management team found that no one was injured or trapped under the debris.

They have, however, started an investigation into the case to determine what caused the building to collapse.

A detailed probe has been started and the building department of the Corporation is also looking into the incident.

On Wednesday, the Kolkata  Improvement Trust  (KIT) issued show-cause notices on the sub-assistant engineer and the firm engaged in repairing the Housing Complex in Chetla, state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs minister Firhad Hakim had said. A portion of the roof of block II of the housing complex caved in on Tuesday afternoon.
