The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the road accident that led to the death of folk singer Kalika Prasad Bhattacharya. The driver had claimed that the car fell into the ditch after being hit by a truck from behind. The statement, however, didn't match with the findings of the forensic experts.

The driver, Arnab Roy, on Wednesday claimed that he was driving the car at a speed of 55 km per hour. The police, however, suspect that the accident took place as the driver had fallen asleep.

A senior police officer said: "The driver claimed that the car was at a speed of 55 km per hour. But the car would not have fallen into the ditch if it had been running in that speed. Moreover, the forensic experts found that there were no damage marks either on the right side of the car or at its back which should have happened if it was hit by a truck. The air bags in the car didn't operate and even the brakes were also not applied when the car went out of control."

There was no skid marks on the road where the accident took place. Preliminary investigation revealed that no attempt was made to slow the car down when it was repeatedly hitting against the iron railings before falling into the ditch.

The police didn't find any eye-witness to the incident as all other colleagues of Kalika Prasad was sleeping when the accident took place.

The driver and Niladri Roy were released from Burdwan Hospital on Wednesday. The two other injured persons – Sudipto Chakraborty and Sandipan Podel – who are still undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Mallick Bazar. Sudipto received injuries on his left leg and spinal cord.

The police would question the driver of the car.
