Police conduct special raid to step up security before election

Kolkata: In view of the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2019 and maintaining law and order across the city, Kolkata Police on Saturday night conducted a special raid which the officers termed as 'Block Raid'.

The raid was organised to target criminals as well as the traffic rules violators.

Senior officers of Kolkata Police have also issued orders for inspection of the incident spots, mainly the accident spots, to find the exact cause of the incident and file a timely report. According to Kolkata Police, the raid was conducted under supervision of divisional Deputy Commissioners and Detective Department. Cyber crime section of Kolkata Police also took part in the raid.

A source said recently Anuj Sharma, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, held a meeting with other senior officials of Kolkata Police and instructed them to conduct special drives across the city to maintain law and order.

As soon the elections are going to be declared, issuance of warrants and rounding up notorious criminals will have to be done as per the norms.

Also, as several warrants were pending, Sharma had asked the officials to issue the warrants and avoid unnecessary delay. He also directed other officials to visit any accident or incident spot promptly to assess the situation and do the needful to maintain law and order.

On Saturday night, the raid commenced from 9 pm and continued till 1 am. During the raid, about 259 persons were arrested as a precautionary measure. For disorderly conduct, 594 persons were arrested across the city. Apart from arrests, police have seized approximately 535 litres of illegal country liquor, 4 kg ganja and 50 grams heroin.

Apart from maintaining law and order, traffic police were instructed to act against errant drivers and traffic law violators. During the special drive, 4076 vehicles were frisked. For riding two-wheeler without helmets, triple riding and flouting driving regulations 711 bike riders were prosecuted as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Also, 226 vehicle drivers were prosecuted as per the rules and guidelines for driving under influence of alcohol.
