SSKM Hospital authorities have formed a medical board comprising three doctors for the treatment of Sunil Patra, a crab seller from South 24-Parganas, who was taken to the hospital on Wednesday after his left leg was severed from his knee following a road accident.

The medical board has been formed comprising Dr Arunabha Das, head of Plastic Surgery department of SSKM Hospital, and Dr Rana Das and Dr Aloke Dutta, who are orthopaedic surgeons at the Hospital. A senior doctor of the CTVS department of the hospital will also assist it. The doctors at SSKM Hospital said it was too early to decide if a surgery was needed on the severed left leg. Patra has been kept under observation at SSKM's Intensive Care Unit.

The main concern for the doctors remain whether any infection has developed or not.

The doctors treating him have concluded that it would be an extremely difficult task to attach the leg of the victim that was severed from his body because of the way it was cut off. The dressing has been done and efforts are on to ensure that he does not develop septicemia and gangrene.

He has been kept under observation for 48 hours. Doctors opine that it is extremely difficult now as many hours have passed before he was admitted to the hospital.

However, the hospital authorities claimed that if the severed leg was attached, the patient would face difficulties due the nature of the accident. Patra, a resident of Kultali in South 24-Parganas, was seriously injured after being hit by a truck when he was on his way to the market.

The victim's left leg was severed from his knee. He was first taken to Jamtala primary health centre in South 24-Parganas and later shifted to SSKM hospital after two private hospitals in the city denied his treatment — one on the ground of inadequate infrastructure while the other demanded a huge price for the treatment which his family members failed to arrange.
