The condition of Abdul Mannan, leader of Opposition, is stable. He is conscious and alert and is on normal diabetic diet, according to a health bulletin issued on Monday by the private hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
Mannan fell ill in the Assembly last week following a scuffle with the Assembly staff who had come to take him out of the hall. Biman Bandopadhyay, the Speaker, had suspended him for two days on last Wednesday after he instigated fellow Congress MLAs to disrupt the House. He had severe suffocation and chest discomfort. He was taken to a private hospital in central Kolkata from where he was shifted to the present venue.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had called him and wished him speedy recovery on Saturday. Parliamentary Affairs minister Partha Chatterjee and deputy chief whip Tapas Roy had also visited the hospital and inquired about his health.
They also talked to the doctors and inquired about the treatment he was being given. He told the doctors to provide best treatment and said the medical expense would be borne by the state government. A permanent pacemaker has been implanted. A team of doctors has been looking after the veteran Congress leader.
