A contractual employee of a nationalised bank in Howrah committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a running train after he was accused of illegally exchanging old currency notes of nearly Rs 34 lakh through his current account.

A question here arises that how a contractual worker of a bank could exchange such a huge amount of money without the support of other employees and the senior officials. A flutter was created after police found a suicide note which was posted by him on a social networking site in which he had accused two of his fellow employees of forcing him to illegally exchange old currency notes at the bank.

According to a GRP official, the body of Rajat Chowdhury, an employee of Union Bank, was recovered from the railway tracks near Uluberia station on Friday night. He was run over by a train. The body was sent for autopsy.

The suicide note posted by the victim some minutes before his death says: "They forced me to exchange the old notes and later lodged a police case against me. I am leaving the world. Please look after my wife and daughter. Please forgive me for taking the drastic step.

The relatives of the deceased said that he was not someone who would commit suicide without grave provocation and alleged that his colleagues were involved in the matter. The victim's family members said that Rajat had left for bank at 3:30 pm after getting a call from the bank manager and posted the message on
Facebook in the evening. They also raised questions on what happened in those six hours that he was forced to commit suicide. They also wanted the CCTV footage to be checked by the police.

His relatives also alleged that if his colleagues were not involved then why didn't they lodge complaint and start a probe. The mobile phones of some senior officials of the bank remained switched off on Saturday afternoon.
