Racing of two buses claimed yet another life in front of Quest Mall on Wednesday afternoon. The incident triggered tension in the area.

Police said that the victim, Md Nematullah (26) was riding on a motor cycle by the side of the road on Sayed Amir Ali Avenue when a mini-bus which was trying to overtake another mini-bus hit the victim. The local residents took him to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.

The local people put up a block on the Syed Amir Ali Avenue following the incident. The agitation continued for nearly one hour. As a result of this, traffic jam was created in the area as the Park Circus-bound vehicles were stranded.

The racing between buses has become a regular phenomenon in the city. They also alleged that police failed to check the racing between the buses within the city.

Police said that the victim was riding as a pillion and heading towards the Park Circus 7 point crossing. He was knocked down by a speeding truck at the Beck Bagan and Sayed Amir Ali Crossing. The victim was a resident of Topsia road. Police have seized the offending vehicle. The accused driver had, however, fled the spot immediately after the accident.

The victims were declared brought dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. The local residents staged a demonstration on the National Highway 34 protesting
against the vehicles that ply at top speed on the highway flouting the traffic norms. Police brought the situation under control.
