New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and Nabadiganta Industrial Development Authority (NDITA) have chalked out plans to set up proper food stalls for thousands of IT personnel who come to New Town and Sector V daily for work.

NDITA has invited an expression of interest or getting a consultant for surveying and making a plan to rehabilitate the existing roadside food stalls in sector V. This is for the first time since the inception of the agency over a decade ago that steps have been taken to set up proper food stalls where the quality of food and cooking medium will be monitored.

Presently, the IT personnel have no proper place to eat and the road side food stalls are the only places they can go to. Food and hospitality industry have tremendous potential as regular supply of food to the employees is required.

The Board of Directors of NKDA have decided that the food court area near TCS/ Eco Space roundabout built by NKDA will be handed over to the self-help groups run by women. This is a part of the strategy to recognise street economy and attempt to formalize it.

A proper food court has come up near Unitech IT complex. The frontage where the shanties stood earlier is a green garden now. In the multi-storeyed car parking lot which will come up in sector V, there will be food stalls on every floor.

A committee has been set up to working upon effective usage of the space in the food court at Action Area I in New Town. There are eight formal markets in New Town where vegetables and other food items are also available. Once these food courts

come up, IT professional visiting sector V daily will have proper place to have their lunch and dinner.
