The Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) Limited is likely to distribute power at Bikaner City in Rajasthan. The city draws large number of tourists for its picturesque golden sand dunes, striking red sandstone forts, stunning palaces and camel safaris.

The company, a part of the Rs. 19,000 crore RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, has received a Letter of Intent for appointment as a power distribution franchisee for supply of electricity to Bikaner city in Rajasthan. This will be the group's third distribution operation in Rajasthan, the other two being Kota and Bharatpur.

The Bikaner city appointment was based on a competitive bidding and a distribution agreement for a period of 20 years is expected to be signed shortly. "We are delighted to expand our new business opportunity in the growing state of Rajasthan.

The Bikaner city distribution franchise, spread over 155 sq.km, currently has 1.42 lakh consumers. It will be our privilege to serve a population of 6.44 lakhs, where the peak load so far has been 130 MW," said Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman, CESC Limited.

"At Bikaner we intend to follow the customer-centric initiatives already introduced at Kota and Bharatpur. In
the light of very valuable experience earned in Kota and Bharatpur, we are committed to making our electricity distribution operation in Rajasthan one of the best in the country." Goenka added, welcoming the new business opportunities.

The electricity generation and distribution company have been serving approximately 567 square kilometers, under Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), as well as parts of Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts.

From three generating stations, the company is accomplishing 88 per cent of customer's electricity requirement and remaining 12% is achieved by purchase of electricity from third parties. More than 50% of coal is sourced from captive mines for generation of electricity in generating stations.
