Tension broke out at Sahidnagar in Maynaguri following a road accident in which a 24-year-old youth was killed after a coal laden truck rammed inside their road side house on Friday morning.
Police said, the victim Raju Roy was sleeping in his room when the erring truck rammed inside their house.
Police came to know from a local person, who witnessed the incident that the truck was at top speed. The driver couldn't control the vehicle and after taking a sharp turn it hit a tree. The tree fell after being hit by the truck and the vehicle mowed down the thatched roof house of the victim. A fire broke out in the truck and it spread in the house. The driver of the truck, however, managed to flee.
Local people rushed to the spot and somehow managed to bring Raju out of the debris. He was declared brought dead when taken to a local health centre with severe burn injuries.
Tension broke out soon after the news of Raju's death spread in the locality as the fire tenders reached late. Local people vented their anger on the fire fighters by pelting stones at them. Two firefighters were injured. The firefighters, however, managed to extinguish the flames amid the chaos and policemen went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The mob even attempted to set two policemen including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) on fire. They poured kerosene on their body. Assessing that the situation was going out of control, additional policemen headed by senior police officers went to the spot and rescued the ASI and the other policeman.
Police chased the people by raising the lathis to disperse the mob.
Police picket has been posted in the area to avoid deterioration of the law and order situation.
