CBI writes to KMC, seeks details of licences issued to Saradha Group

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sent a letter to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Thursday seeking details of the trade licences issued to the Saradha Group.

This is the second time when the central investigating agency has sought such a report from the civic body. In mid-2015, the CBI had previously asked KMC to state the reasons behind issuing 43 trade licences to the chit fund company.

Though CBI officers have claimed that they had already sent the letter to KMC, the civic body authorities said they are yet to receive the letter from the investigating agency.

According to sources in the CBI, the agency has once again asked the civic body to produce the documents against which the licences were issued to the chit fund group.

KMC had issued 43 trade licences to Saradha Group to run business in different names under one umbrella.

All the trade licences were issued against the same address, i.e. 455 Diamond Harbour Road.

As per the documents, the 43 trade licences were issued to run businesses on an area of around 6,000 square feet.

However, during investigation, CBI officers went to place and found that the plot against which the trade licences were issued was only 1,300 square feet.

The CBI officers had sought all documents relevant to this case from the civic body after the matter came to light.

Congress Councillor Prakash Upadhyay had brought the matter to the notice of CBI and Enforcement Directorate.
