Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Thursday received an anonymous threat call.
The caller identified himself as a Bharatiya Janata Party supporter and disconnected the line immediately after he threatened Banerjee.
Banerjee lodged a complaint with the Hare Street police station on Thursday, based on which police have started an investigation into the matter. No arrests have been made yet.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the culprit might have called from Uttar Pradesh.
It may be recalled that Banerjee had received a threat call on January 12 when an anonymous caller had used abusive language and threatened him. Banerjee had lodged a complaint with the police on January 13, but the police are yet to identify the culprit. Reacting sharply, Banerjee said: "BJP is playing this dirty game." Trinamool leaders said that as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had spoken against demonetisation, BJP was trying to harass her party leaders in one way or the other.
"They have arrested Sudip Bandyopadhyay and now they are threatening Kalyan Banerjee so that there is no one to speak against demonetisation on the floor of Parliament. But BJP's effort will not produce results as Trinamool will fight for poor people and will criticise demonetisation which has affected the country's economy adversely," Trinamool leaders said.
