Mystery shrouds death of man found near Damodar River bank

Police recovered the body of a man from the bank of Damodar River late Sunday night.

Investigating officers could not find any scars or injury marks on the victim's body and remained clueless as to the circumstances that led to his death.

Police came to learn that Subhajit Bhattacharya, a middle-aged professor in a private engineering college, had gone for a picnic party. along with some associates, at the bank of Damodar River on Sunday.

After the picnic, he had taken some utensils to be cleaned in the river water. His associates knew that he had gone to the river, but were surprised after he was not found anywhere.

Some other members of the picnic party began searching for him, but they failed to locate him anywhere near the river bank.

Some of them eventually went to the nearby police station to lodge a missing dairy.

On Sunday evening, police began an investigation and search operation for Bhattacharya. Late on Sunday, some policemen found his body on the river bank.

"The case is really mysterious. Other members of the picnic party could not spot his body on the river bank. The policemen started the search at around 10 pm and some officers spotted the body at around 11.30 pm. We doubt somebody is hiding something from us," said a police officer.

Police called up some of the persons who a part of the picnic party.

"Some people at the picnic party were interrogated. We have some important clues, but it is premature to divulge that information," said an investigating officer.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

"We are waiting for the preliminary report to come. It is too early to say that he was killed, but we are looking at all angles," said the officer.

A team of investigators reached the professor's house at Durgapur. Investigators also questioned his parents.
