Tension ran high at Nalmuri More on Basanti Expressway following a road accident on Monday morning, in which a 53-year-old man was killed.
A mob damaged the killer truck and staged a demonstration on the Basanti Expressway. The local residents put up a roadblock demanding
the construction of speed-breaker in the area. They alleged that accidents often take place in the area as the vehicles run at high speed through the locality.
After being informed, the police reached the spot and recovered the body. They body was sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examination. Police intervened and tried to convince the local people but they refused to lift the demonstration until they get assurance from the district administration regarding the construction of the speed breaker. The road block continued for nearly an hour. As a result of this, a huge traffic jam was seen in the area where vehicles were stranded for one hour.
However, the mob later lifted the road block after senior police officers gave them assurances that their request would be considered with utmost sincerity.
The victim, Nasir Ali Mollah (53), a resident of Bhangar in South 24-Parganas, was going to his workplace on his motorcycle along the Basanti Highway. When he was crossing Nalmuri More on the Basanti Expressway, a truck which was running at top speed lost control and hit the victim. The victim died on the spot. The driver of the vehicle and the helper fled from the spot immediately after the accident. The local people told the police that the accident happened as the killer vehicle was trying to cross another vehicle.
The local residents alleged that there was no police patrolling in the night and early morning as a result of which, the vehicles pass through the area at high speed leading to accidents. Despite repeated appeals, no action was taken to check the incidents.
