Winter is likely to come back within 48 hours in Kolkata, the RMC Kolkata experts predicted. The cold wave had suddenly given a miss to the city as the mercury was restricted within 16-18 degrees Celsius.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata earlier recorded the minimum temperature, 18.2 degrees Celsius on Friday which is 3 degrees above from the normal temperature. The maximum temperature was recorded at around 31 degrees Celsius.
But the experts believe that the temperature will dip down to 13-15 degrees Celsius within two days.
The sudden surge in the temperature was the fallout of a western disturbance, which restricted the northerly winds from hitting South Bengal. But effect of western disturbance will soon go as the northerly winds will blow towards South Bengal.
However, the western disturbance created a whirlwind on North Bengal, which was basically a cyclonic wind. The immediate fall out of such cyclonic wind was rainfall, which Kolkata witnessed on Friday morning. The experts believe that no such rainfall will happen again.
The temperature could go down to 15 degree Celsius in next week, the experts further added.
It should be recalled that winter came late this year. The RMC Kolkata studied that in 2016, winter had hit the town more than a fortnight ahead of time on November 22, with the hottest first half of November in five decades making way for one of the coldest second half of November.
Weathermen predicted that the cold spell will not continue till end of February month. The temperature will increase in Kolkata by the second half of February. "Now it is very difficult to predict that another western disturbance will occur or not. We could not predict sudden rainfall in the middle of the winter. That was unnatural. Sometimes it happens. But the winter will leave by February 20-22 which is almost confirmed," said the expert.
"This winter is the fall out of snowfall in northern India. The chilly winds are continuously blowing over Bengal. But the wind will be weaken by the mid of February," an expert had said.
Meanwhile, most of the amusement parks, zoological and botanical gardens, Eco park at New Town received good footfall on Sunday.
