Following the direction from the state's secretariat to take action against those who had triggered the violence at Burdwan's Ausgram, the police have arrested 12 persons including a Trinamool Congress councillor for his alleged involvement in the incident.

Police on Saturday night held the Trinamool Congress councillor and former chairman of Guskara municipality, Chanchal Kumar Garai from his house and he was later arrested after an interrogation at the police station.

Nabanna has given an order to the district administration to take strict action without seeing the political affiliation of the accused. Police have also arrested a CPI(M) leader, Suren Hembram who was also involved in fuelling the violence.

After Saturday's incident, the main gate of the Ausgram police station was locked with the deployment of large number of police personnel in and around the police station area. No one other than police personnel were allowed inside the police station complex on Sunday. There was tight security. Many of the shops in the area remained closed. People did not come out of their houses in fear and tension ran high in the area. Police conducted route march on Sunday in the village and monitored the situation. The local villagers who run shops and put up stalls in the local market did not open the shops to avoid trouble.

It may be mentioned that Ausgram police station turned into a battlefield on Saturday after a huge mob attacked and ransacked some portions of it. At least six police personnel were injured in the incident. The mob also set an outer portion of the police station on fire. The local people alleged that police were helping in an illegal and unauthorised construction in a local school compound. They were demanding the removal of the Inspector-in-charge of the local police station.

Things took an ugly turn after police held three teachers from a local school on the compound of which a construction was allegedly being done by the tacit support of the Inspector in charge of the local police station. Teachers of the school, students and guardians staged demonstration at Ausgram Police Station and blocked a nearby road for hours on Friday protesting against the unauthorised construction. They also demanded the release of three teachers of the school held by the police.
