Many parts of the city and its adjoining areas became inundated following an overnight rain leading to traffic congestion in some stretches on Saturday morning.
With the regional meteorological office in Kolkata predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in South Bengal districts including Kolkata in the next three days, the state government has issued an alert in various coastal districts. All the fishermen have been cautioned not to voyage in the seas. The fishing trawlers that have already gone deep into the sea were asked to return. According to the Met office, the East and West Midnapore districts may witness maximum rainfall in the next few days.
The state Irrigation department has decided to open control rooms as there is a prediction of heavy rains in some parts. According to the weather office, a low pressure turf may be formed which will bring in more rain to the city and the adjoining areas. According to Nabanna sources, the disaster management department has also been closely monitoring the situation and control rooms would also be made operational to fight the situation. An alert has been issued to some of the coastal districts. The district administrative officers in various districts have been asked to closely monitor the situation. The state government is also keeping a tab on the release of water by various barrages in the state. The Irrigation department has already cancelled the leave of its employees.
Due to overnight rains, water got accumulated in some parts of the city including Jadavpur, Tollygunge, Behala, Rashbehari Avenue, Ballygunge, Kasba, Ruby, Park Circus, some stretches of MG Road and Central Avenue on Saturday morning prompting the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to work on a war footing. Employees of the drainage department of the KMC and the senior engineers rushed to the areas to discharge the accumulated water. According to the weather office, till 9 am, Joka received rainfall of 50.04 mm, Alipore 50.29 mm, Ballygunge 33.27 mm, Ultadanga 30.99, Behala 56.39, New market 25.09 mm and Patuli 65.5 mm.
